Chip Breaker – which is pronounced chip ′brāk·ər – is an irregularity or channel cut into the face of a lathe tool behind the cutting edge to cause removed stock to break into small chips or curls.  They appear to look like a design in some cases in inserts, see a few different styles in the photo above.
